Formulated for High Performance

Definition

We tested a lot of ingredients and found Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) creates great definition. We also use cyclopentasiloxane for light moisture that dries quickly and enhances definition.

Hold

For hold that gives you soft curls, we found
Polyvinylpyrrolidone/Vinyl Acetate (VA/VP Copolymer) works very well because it binds to hair and holds without crunch.

Softness

We use a small amount of Argan oil and Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, a lightweight conditioner for soft curls you'll love.

Heat & Humidity

Here is where silicones really outshine natural oils. We use Cyclopentasiloxane and Amodimethicone in our activating spray. These water based silicones protect the hair from thermal heat and UV.

Anti-Frizz

Frizz reduction starts with gentle cleansing and hydration. Finish with oils (we use Argan oil) and water based silicones (like Dimethicone) that coat hair and prevent moisture from the air from entering the hair shaft.

Dry & Damage Repair

We use a combination of Macadamia Seed Oil to regulate scalp hydration, Olive Oil derivatives to add suppleness, repairing proteins and moisturizers like Vitamin E and water based silicones.

Product FAQ

Answer

It’s in the best interest of curls. Research shows Sulfates have been found to be harsh on curls, stripping their natural oils necessary to help curl shape form, blocking moisture, or causing buildup that can weigh them down.

Numerous scientific studies found that Parabens can be harmful to your body and health in various ways and cause skin irritation.

Answer

Curls often need a little extra love to help their patterns form. Ingredients such as Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, and Amodimethicone are lightweight, water based, silicones. They give your curls excellent definition and lasting hold.

These water-based silicones are used to help the product spread through your curls easily and lock in moisture. They work especially well for curly hair because they do not weigh your curls down, keeping them defined and bouncy- not dull. Then they wash out, no build up.

Answer

Macadamia nut oil helps to regulate a proper balance of oil production from the scalp, helping to evenly disperse oils necessary for curl formation. Not too greasy and not too dry.

Argan Oil is a natural emollient (softner), it gives your curls moisturization, softness, and shine.

Answer

When styling cream gels are applied to soaking wet curls, it helps them lock in the definition (curl shape) and moisture provided by the water. Classic Curls especially love this technique.

Result? More definition and less frizz.

Answer

When styling products are applied to partially dried waves and curls the product stays on the outside of the hair and increases volume.

Answer

Starting with a foundation of curl friendly cleansing & conditioning that maintains natural oils and pH balance and hydrates curls helps their patterns form before styling even starts. Add a high performance styler with simple drying techniques that enhance definition and you get beautiful curls in fewer steps.

Answer

Good question. We are deeply invested in the product development process. First, we identify a desired benefit such as a booster spray or a lightweight leave-in conditioner based on the needs we see and requests from consumers.. Then, we determine which curl type(s) the product will be best for and any other important factors, like the ideal texture of the product.

From there, we use our top notch chemist (who is also curly herself) to develop samples that meet our ingredient profile of high performance ingredients with nourishing botanicals.

When we like a sample, we send it out to the curl panel for a wider range of feedback so we can check it does what it says for the specific curl type(s). Often we will optimize the formula from there to make it even better.

Lastly, it goes into safety and stability testing followed by production. The whole process takes anywhere from 6 months to 18 months.

Answer

Safety: As a matter of principle we never use parabens and all reformulated products are methylisothiazolinone free as well. We only choose ingredients with an EWG rating of 4 or less and all ingredients are used substantially below EWG testing thresholds, further increasing their safety.

For efficacy: we use a group of internal testers to vet all new products. For larger scale products they are tested by our proprietary curl panel, described below.

Each product also undergoes the appropriate stability and micro testing at the chemist and at the factory.

Answer

Our curl panel is a diverse, voluntary group, representing all curl types. To join, you must be located in the Continental US, have no allergies to personal care ingredients and be willing to test one or two products then answer a brief feedback survey after testing each product. If you are a match for a product test, we will email you to confirm your interest in the product and availability. Testing one product takes 7-10 days depending on how often you cleanse your curls. In addition to the free sample, each tester receives a small payment as a thank you.

To sign up, please complete the survey here to let us know about your curls, hair care needs and product preferences. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/RLTestingpanel
